The Birthplace of Hanuman

Birthplace of Hanuman

Anjaneri

A little off the territory of Nashik, Anjaneri Mountains offers the right amount of solitude and peace from the fussy city life. But reaching here is a big task. Tourists will have to first take a bus from Nashik to reach Trimbakeshwar, and further trek for another 10 kilometers to reach the Anjaneri mountain. It will be tad tedious but the promising view that one gets to see is worth all the efforts.

Anjaneri Parvat is quite significant amongst the devotees as locals say that the cave on the top of the hill was the place where Goddess Anjana gave birth to Lord Hanuman. And that's how the mountain got its name. Along with the cave, believed to be the place where Lord Hanuman was born, there's Anjani Mata temple. A lot of other places associated with the life of Lord Hanuman are also there, which can be seen while trekking on the hill. One such place is a cave, which is believed to be the spot where Lord Pawan Dev took Bal Hanuman when he was hit by the 'vajra' of Lord Indra. Also, there is a Mata Anjana temple; the place where Goddess Anjani meditated for a kid, and Shiva ultimately appeared in front of her to bless a boon. There are two pindies inside the temple; the big one is of Mata Anjana and the small one is of Bal Hanuman. A cave decorated with inscriptions that are as old as 1000 years also appears while trekking on the hill. 108 Jain caves are found here belonging to 11th-12th century. The area around Anjaneri was once ruled for a brief period by Veersen Ahir(Also spelled Abhir), who made it his capital.

The trail leads to a magnificent trekking adventure through diverse sceneries of Anjaneri Lake, caves, waterfalls, healing Lake, etc. As you reach the summit of the Anjaneri Hill, be ready to be greeted by verdant mountain ranges intermingled with spectacular dense forests, ravishing rivulets and meandering paths. The hilltop lodges the Temple of Anjani Mata, dedicated to Lord Hanuman’s mother. The temple is majestically constructed and is massive in shape. Two different ways go beyond the Anjaneri Mata Temple- one of them takes you to the Seeta cave where you can see striking carvings adorning the cave interiors. The other way takes you directly to the citadel of Anjaneri fort. Here a bigger Temple of Anjani Mata can be seen.

Things to do and see around

To capture the beauty of the Anjaneri hills, the best way is to trek through it. Many prominent vestiges are present on the hill that are worth a visit like Anjaneri Village, Lord Hanuman temple, Anjani Mata temple, and cave. Apart from the Anjaneri hill, one can go for trekking to Brahmagiri Mountain.

My experience at Anjaneri

I was seventeen when I visited Anjaneri hills for the first time with my childhood friends. It was first week of July and we were on the way to Anjaneri from my home town Nashik, we left the city in the early morning around 5:30 AM. The roads were desolated with sprinkling rain. At around 6:15AM we reached the base of the mountain and it was a love at first site for me with the wind flowing through my body, the sound of birds like they are singing a welcome song for me, and the mountain! it was fully covered with a green blanket of trees. In the middle of the trek there comes a point that only few people know of. When we finish the steps, if we follow the path it will lead us to the summit but if we take right and go straight till the edge of the mountain, we will see one of the most beautiful view "The reverse waterfall". Yes a reverse fall guys! The force of wind takes the water in air and it actually looks like a reverse waterfall. After almost 1 KM walk, we saw the first glimpse of the main temple of Anjani Mata at the summit of the mountain. After that, we started exploring the area. And then we started coming down, and took a refreshing bath in the holy lake.
And like this my journey to Anjaneri mountain ended.

Getting there

To reach the base of the hill, tourists can take a bus from Nashik to Trimbakeshwar. Four kilometers before Trimbakeshwar comes a prominent point from where one can trek to reach a hill. After trekking for approximately five kilometers on the hill, there’s another point from where the actual trek to Anjaneri hill starts.
By Air: You can take a direct flight to Nashik airport and then from there, you can either hire a direct cab or catch public transport to reach the fort. The distance between the airport and the base of the fort is 50 km.
By Rail: Nashik is well connected to all other cities and towns by rail, and hence you can reach it directly by catching a train. From the station, you can either hire a cab or use public transport to reach the fort.
By Road: The region around Fort is has a good road connectivity and is easily accessible by road.
